Birkweiler has 720 inhabitants and an area of 5 km². It was first documentally mentioned in 1285 as "Birkewilre".

Birkweiler lies beneath the Hohenberg that has a lookoutpoint on its 556m top.

The two churches are built in neo gothic architecture on the end of the 19th century.

Birkweiler has numerous houses of the 18th century, especially in the main street.
