Meckenheim has 3350 inhabitants and an area of 15,1 km². It was first documentally mentioned in 769 as "Macchenheim".

The catholic church of St. Egidio is a baroque building from the 18th century.

Meckenheim has numerous impressive vintner houses from the 16th - 18th century.
